Barrabas woke at 6:00 a.m. in a room in the old Concord hotel in La Paz. His eyes opened to a view of an ornate ceiling high overhead. He quickly rolled out of bed and put on his work clothes—wool slacks and a casual blue shirt. Thin shafts of yellow light cut through the seams of the curtains over the double windows. He unlatched the louvered balcony doors and threw them open.
In the distance the snow-dappled peak of Illimani caught the first rays of the sun. Two stories below, the Plaza Murillo was wide and silent and virtually empty. A flock of dirty pigeons hovered around the statue of Simon Bolivar, and an old Indian woman wearing a felt hat wandered around the base of the monument, feeding them handfuls of corn from a woven sack.
Barrabas sniffed at the crisp air of the high Andes. The lack of oxygen made a palpable difference in the texture of the air. For the natives of the highest capital city in the world, it wasn't a problem. But it took time for the human body to adjust to life at an altitude of thirty-seven hundred meters.
Barrabas knew that he and his soldiers would tire more easily up here, and weariness was a liability in the kind of hard, fast moving strikes that spelled success or failure for a commando team. But there were other problems to think about. How to obtain munitions and ordnance. And how to get into Jessup's safety deposit box in a Bolivian bank. Geoff Bishop and Claude Hayes had been sent to Lima with instructions to find a helicopter and go to Arequipa, a Peruvian city a hundred and fifty miles from the Bolivian capital. The rest of the mercs had arrived as tourists and checked into the Concord late the night before. It might take days to do the proper surveillance and set up a heist. And he still hadn't told the mercs about his secret rendezvous with the senator's secretary the day before.
The city was quiet but quick to awaken. A car shot around the plaza and disappeared behind the presidential palace. A half-ton pulled up in front of the National Congress. Armed soldiers carefully exited from the back and smoothed their uniforms before replacing the guards at the gate.
Directly across the square from the hotel stood the target—the Banco Nacional de la Repüblica Boliviana.
As Barrabas watched, a caretaker stepped up to the bronze front doors of the domed nineteenth- century Spanish colonial building. He selected a key from among many on an iron ring and inserted it into the old-fashioned lock. The three-meter-high doors swung smoothly back like the well-oiled gates of a fortress, and were fastened by hooks to the wall. Then the caretaker pulled a rag from his pocket and began to polish the wrought-iron grille that covered the thick glass on the inner doors.
Introductory bank-robbing, Barrabas mused.
There was a knock on the door, and Barrabas crossed the room and opened it. O'Toole gave him a curt nod and slipped inside.
